In a small ceremony in Maadi, Arch. Mohamed M. Radwan handed out Z line DeZine 5th Anniversary Design Competition Awards to to the winners, yesterday.

Now Open: El Dahan Restaurant in 6th of October. El Dahan is a well known Egyptian grilled & Oriental food franchise, established in 1890, they approached Z line to design their new branch in 6th of October city, while creating a revamp for their brand including a new logo and visual identity.

Their request was to create a design that reflected their Egyptian Heritage while suiting the current contemporary design trends. We played with Islamic heritage lines, Earth tones and colors, icons from the classical and contemporary Egyptian culture and pop icons of the 5os.

The design services rendered to the client included: Interior Design, Furniture Selection, Graphic Design, Interior Branding & Design Consultancy.

El Dahan 6th of October is now open for public, in Solimar Bldg. beside Metro Market, behind Al Hosary Mosque.

Now Open: 7D Simulator Cinema in Maadi City Center (Carrefour) Mall, in Maadi. After their successful partnership with Z line Dezine in Downtown Mall & City Stars, 7D approached Z line Dezine for the design of their 3rd branch in Cairo, located in  Maadi City Center. The MCC Mall branch features one theater, and is the 3rd application of the new 7D design concept, already established by Z line Dezine. It is located in the parking area, in front of Chili’s.

The final design of 7D Simulator Cinema in Maadi City Center (Carrefour) Mall, in Maadi. 7D Simulator Cinema is an entertainment cinema system, that mixes unique 3D movie experience with extreme motion, sound and special effects. The show features special effects like wind-snow-rain-fog-smoke and 3D motion, all synchronized to the shown movies, in order to “the ultimate movie experience”.

Enter a room full of architects, and chances are, easily 80% of them will be wearing black! Why is that? Is it a stereotype? Or is it some kind of architectural dress code? Most architects don’t abide by these fashion recipes, but if somebody outside the profession comes across just one architect fitting the Corbusian mold then, alas, all architects must do the same.

That Le Corbusier’s and Philip Johnson’s proclivities for a certain attire has trickled down to numerous enough architects to become a popular stereotype, is the reason this small “Black” book by architect Cordula Rau, asks numerous architects over a seven year period, the eternal famous question “Why do architects wear black?”.

The sketchbook-size booklet asks a hundred or so architects and Architecture professionals, and publishes one response per spread with the original handwritten answer alongside the typed, translated text and the name of the architect.

The answers reveal as much about the personalities as they do about the question itself. Some of the most interesting answers came from signature architects, Peter Eisenman and Rem Koolhaas state that they don’t wear black. Ben van Berkel thinks wearing black started somewhere in Japan.

The answers in the book cover the array  from the enigmatic to straightforward, to simply not answering the question that was posed – something that architects are very good at!

Certain strands of thought can be discovered while reading the book: black is a (non-)color that allows other colors to stand out, black is an easy choice, black is fashionable, black is tragic.

It will make you think about the design decisions you make on a daily basis and the intricacies and quirks of fellow design practitioners you know, or have heard lecture.

So why do I think architects wear black? The most obvious answer in my opinon is to set ourselves apart from the others, the “non-architects”.

The Final Design for Almaza Avenue Kiosk at Smash Sports Club, Cairo Airport. Sectors Development & Construction request a 3×3 m kiosk for their new real estate development, Almaza Avenue, located in Heliopolis, Cairo. The Kiosk was installed in Smash Club earlier this month, and is to be re-installed in several Clubs across Cairo in the coming couple of months.

After their successful partnership with Z line Dezine in Downtown Mall, Cairo. 7D approached Z line Dezine for the design of their 2nd branch in Cairo, located in City Stars, Cairo’s most acclaimed Mall. The City Stars Mall branch features two theaters, and is the 2nd application of the new 7D design concept, already established by Z line Dezine. It is located in the fourth floor, Phase 1, City Stars Mall, Heliopolis.
